Sidewall Markings explained

Dont be confused by the markings on the sid ef your tyre, check out quick reference guide to help you through it

The DOT number is more for internal use. However, the last four digits on the DOT code tell you the week and year the tyre was produced. In this case the tyre was produced in the 10th week of 2004.

Many modern motorcycles have specific tyres designed to optimises the handling characteristic of the bike itself. All Bridgestone radial tyres read in the same way.

Check the on line fitment guide to see if your particular bike should have a “bike specific tyre” If it does you can find the corresponding code letter as shown in the image.

Battlax means the family name. There are a number of family names in the Bridgestone range. Including Battlax, Exedra, Trail Wing and Battle Wing
BT-014 means the type of tyre. Of course this could be BT-021, BT-016, BT-020 etc…
R means rear fitment. You will see the letter F if it’s a front tyre
Radial indicates the construction of the tyre

The last letter is the tyre spec letter. In this case it’s the letter G. There are numerous letters we use to distinguish the varying types of tyres

This is the size, load and speed rating of your tyre.

190 is the width in millimeters
50 is the aspect ratio.

Indicates the sidewall is 50% of the width of the tyre..50% of 190mm
ZR indicates the tyre is speed rated to over 150mph and the R indicates the tyre is of a radial construction

17 indicates the bead diameter is 17” meaning its designed to fit 17” wheels of the correct width
M/C indicates the tyre is for motorcycles only
(73W) is a further load and speed index. If this appears on a tyre then it will appear in one of two ways.
The first is out of brackets 73W. This indicates the tyre has a maximum speed of 168mph W with a maximum load of 73 (365kgs)

The second is in brackets (73W). This indicates the tyre is capable of speeds over 168mph. The maximum speed is determined by the following: For every 10mph over 169mph the load index has to be reduced by 10%. For example – at 168 mph the maximum load is 365kgs, so at 178 mph the maximum load will reduce from 365kgs to 328.5kgs. So in effect the tyre will now have a load indices of 70..(see attached conversion table) and so on.
